Sci-Tech Oscar 2015 Consideration list
The Scientific and Technical Awards Committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that 21 scientific and technical achievements, 16 distinct investigations, have been selected for further awards consideration.
The list is made public to allow individuals and companies with similar devices or claims of prior art the opportunity to submit achievements for review.
The deadline to submit additional entries is Tuesday, August 26, at 11:59 p.m. PT.
The committee has selected the following technologies for further consideration:
Foundry At Siggraph with V-Ray + Speed tests
With SIGGRAPH 2014 opening in Vancouver, the announcements are flowing from all the major players – including The Foundry and Chaos Group. The two companies have been working together on the development of V-Ray for three of The Foundry products:
V-Ray for MODO,
V-Ray for NUKE and
V-Ray for KATANA.
The MODO and NUKE versions are being unveiled for the first time at SIGGRAPH and are immediately available as a free public beta, and the commercial version of V-Ray for KATANA is available for purchase.

The VFX of Guardians of the Galaxy
Strong characters, immersive environments and a ripping 80s soundtrack – that’s Marvel’s latest film Guardians of the Galaxy in a nutshell. With two main characters that would be realized entirely in CG, and with vast space and earth-like environments to create, the visual effects crew were once again crucial to completing the film. Overall visual effects supervisor Stephane Ceretti, associate visual effects supervisor Olivier Dumont and visual effects producer Susan Pickett guided the ship. They lead a vast army of VFX artists from 13 companies including MPC, Framestore, Luma Pictures, Method Studios, Imageworks and an in-house unit, plus previs/postvis teams from Proof and The Third Floor. fxguide takes a look at just some of the major sequences.

LookFX Folds; Staff and Projects Move to Mass Market VFX (Exclusive)
Vancouver, Canada — LookFX, a highly regarded small vfx studio with offices in Los Angeles, New York and Vancouver, has closed its doors — but its staff is not disbanding.
The staff of Look has moved en masse to Mass Market, a commercials vfx company that is entering the feature vfx business. Though the Look name has perished, the staff will become Mass Market’s features division. Look’s current projects move with them.
Look officially ceased operations doors Monday and its staff is already at work at Mass Market. LookFX partners Henrik Fett and Mark Driscoll will be co-managing directors of Mass Market’s feature division. They will report to Jay Lichtman, managing director of MassMarket.
